Theres three main types of Gaelic:
-Scottish
-Irish
-Manx

I most familar with Manx Gaelic as I spent the first 13years of my life in the Isle of Man. I only remember a few phrases, but I do remember in primary school (5-11 years old) you learn some Manx Gaelic but it was optional. When it comes to Secondary School (11-18) I think you could have choosen it as a subject but most kids were forced to focus on the madatory French or Spainish lessions.

Manx Gaelic is still somewhat used but not many speak it fuilently I remeber reading somewere that theres only 1800 people that speak it as a second languge. They still have signs and books written in manx but its almost unheard of to see it outside of the Isle of Man. But there has been a bit of a revival in it.

As for Irish Gaelic it is an optional language to learn in schools here in Northern Ireland, I choose not to since French was wreaking my mind enough as is. But it is much more wide spread. A lot of the signs have both the english and Irish translations on them, theres a decicated newspaper and tv channel exclusivly in Irish. Naturally its likely even more prominant in the Republic of Ireland but I haven't been across that border.

I know nothing about Scottish Gaelic but you could possibly ask any of the Scots about it.
