So for a few weeks now I’ve been debating doing something like this. I play a lot of games since it's pretty much what I love doing most in my spare time as is the same with a lot of you guys here. Occasionally a game comes along which for one reason or another I fall in love with and want to share with other people and have other people experience. What I plan on doing here is every so often talking about one of those games and giving a review of the overall experience.

Now obviously I am in no way a journalist or qualified to be doing this, everything I say and the games I will talk about will be my in my own personal opinion. However I’ll try to be as honest as possible with everything I do say. There will also be no real restrictions on the type of games I talk about. They could be any genre and be anywhere between the most obscure of indie games to the biggest AAA titles. If I enjoyed it and it struck a chord with me, I’ll talk about it.

Of course I’ll be doing this for you guys so some feedback of the overall idea would be appreciated. If there’s people that care and are interested, let me know and I’ll be happy to continue doing these. If you have any suggestions on games that you think I should try out then feel free to recommend them either here or pm me. I’ll also keep a list of games I’ve spoken about below here as I do, the first of which I’ll begin working on immediately after posting this. Thanks guys.

Reviewed games;
Ori and the Blind Forest

Having an opinion makes you qualified to do this. Looking forward to it.

The first game I want to talk about and the game that really pushed me to want to start doing this is Ori and the Blind Forest.

While at first glance Ori and the Blind Forest appears to be just a standard artsy 2D platformer, it very quickly proves to be something much more. From the very beginning it hits you with an amazing orchestral score and some very deep yet simplistic storytelling which gets you immediately invested in your main character, Ori, and the journey put in front of him. Now don’t get it wrong, this game is still a Metroidvania-style, 2D adventure platformer so if you don’t enjoy those style of games which I’m aware a lot of people don’t, this game probably isn’t for you.

At first in Ori and the Blind Forest, the game-play can feel pretty simple and lackluster, give it time. The first half hour/hour or so of the game sets out to really just give you the feel for Ori’s abilities and the game-play in general. That’s not to say it isn’t still enjoyable as it definitely still is, it just means you’ll have to wait a little bit before the game really starts to get challenging, and believe me, it will get challenging. As the game goes on you will learn new abilities which will progress you further with the story or you could choose to do a little backtracking to areas you’ve already previously been in search of power-ups which can increase your health/energy. Either way, the game makes that choice yours. At a few points in the game there are some short chase/escape sequences in which the difficulty spikes massively. You will be forced to make use of all your abilities and require some solid reflexes/muscle memory to make it through. What’s more and could maybe make this become a little infuriating is that your ability to save and make checkpoints is disabled for the duration of these sequences. Luckily these sequences aren’t too long and don’t occur too often so after a little trial and error, you will make it through eventually.

Now, I have to take a minute to talk about the musical score present throughout this game. Ori and the Blind Forest has one of the best soundtracks for a game that I’ve heard from any game and I don’t think I can put into words just how much I enjoyed it. It hooks you at the start, it will still have you hooked at the end and it blends so well with the game-play itself, picking up and dropping off exactly where it needs to, only getting you all the more invested in the game you’re playing. I’ll make sure to slot in the complete soundtrack down below. The art-style is also beautiful and only helps to accomplish the same.

Overall I put about 10 hours or so into the game before finishing the story and that’s without going back to get all the collectibles and power-ups. Without throwing him under the bus I know Krzy has put slightly more time into the game and hasn’t finished yet. I bought the game when it was on sale and definitely do not regret it and even for full price which I’m sure is around the £15/$20 mark, highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre. Taking everything into consideration I’d give Ori and the Blind Forest a solid 8/10.

Since this is the first time I’ve done this there will obviously be a few things I could improve on, any advice would be great. Anyway that was Ori and the Blind Forest, thanks.
